Fox News host Chris Wallace was pushed beyond his breaking point Sunday when a Democrat who was asked about Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server insisted on dragging what Wallace called "a red herring" into the discussion.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., sought to focus his appearance on Fox News Sunday on the fact that former Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he used a private email server to communicate with State Department employees while he was in the process of modernizing technology at the State Department. Schiff sought to liken Powell's actions to those of Clinton, who used a private home-based server for multiple top secret communications during her tenure as secretary of state.

During the interview, Wallace asked Schiff about the attempted hacks against Clinton's server, but Schiff sought to talk about Powell. Wallace interrupted Schiff and then sounded off.

"Wait a minute. No, no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he said. "Hillary Clinton is running for president. Colin Powell is not running for president. The rules in 2004 were completely different. They're complete different guidelines. Sir, the guidelines were repeatedly strengthened in 2005, in 2006, in 2007 — 2011. Hillary Clinton was operating in a different world. Can we please stay to the issue of what Hillary Clinton did or didn't do and not talk about Colin Powell?"

"Well, I know you don't want to talk about Colin Powell because you — you don't want to …" replied Schiff.

Wallace said the comparison was irrelevant and pressed home his point about whether the server Clinton used was secure.

"She should not have used the private server. She's admitted she should not have used a private server," Schiff said.

He later sought to return the interview to Powell. " … please let me at least finish the point," he said.

"Not on Powell. I'm — I'm — forgive me, I'm going to keep going. I — I — I — we're done with Colin Powell," Wallace said.

"I think it's very telling, though, Chris, that there's no interest in anyone here but Secretary Clinton. That, to me, is a very different standard," Schiff said after some crosstalk ended.

"Really?" replied Wallace. "Because she's the only one running for president."

"Yes, but does that mean that other secretaries didn't use the same practice, that their practices are irrelevant here?" Schiff then insisted.

"I — I think, first of all, we've shown that it is — it is different. And, secondly, I think it's, frankly, a red herring, sir, and I would expect more from you," he said.
