The Web hosting well is a deep one, with many services vying for your dollar. There are plenty of excellent choices, and AccuWeb Hosting is among them with robust shared, virtual-private-server, dedicated, and WordPress hosting plans that offer plenty of flexibility. Though AccuWeb Hosting doesn't claim top rank in any one hosting sub-category and does suffer from a few minor complaints, it's still an excellent all-around service. In the end, DreamHost and HostGator remain our top picks overall.

Shared Web Hosting
AccuWeb Hosting is a Web host with incredibly varied shared plans. The company's lower-end, Linux-based solid-state servers start at $3.36 per month for unlimited domains, 10GB of storage, 150 email accounts, and 60GB of data transfers, while the top-tier servers start at $13.56 per month for 50GB of storage, 1,000 email accounts, and 200GB of monthly data transfers.

AccuWeb Hosting also offers Linux Cloud Hosting (starting at $5.06 per month), Windows Cloud Hosting (starting at $6.35 per month), and Windows Classic Hosting (starting at $4.21 per month). This adds up to lots of options for hosting your business or personal site. Also, you shouldn't underestimate the importance of Windows-based servers; they're vital if you want to run .ASP scripts, and some other hosts don't offer them.

These are quality shared hosting plans, but HostGator, the category's Editors' Choice, tops them all. The Web host's shared packages all boast unlimited storage, bandwidth, and email addresses—and unlimited domains if you sign up for either the Baby ($7.96 per month) or Business ($11.96 per month) plans. Likewise, DreamHost's shared packages have unlimited storage, domains, email, and monthly data transfers.

VPS Web Hosting
AccuWeb Hosting has seven wallet-friendly Linux- and Windows-based VPS plans for webmasters to consider, ranging from Linux Classic (from $7.99 per month) to Windows VPS Reseller (starting at $115 per month). If you need more juice, AccuWeb has a VPS package that tops out at 30GB of RAM, 1,000GB of storage, and 6,000GB of monthly data transfers, with its $315-per-month SkyScraper VPS Reseller plan. Note: You can create 250 email accounts with a Windows VPS plan; you can create unlimited email accounts with a Linux VPS plan.

The number of AccuWeb Hosting packages isn't very different from Hostwinds' offerings. Still, Hostwinds retains its position as the Editors' Choice for VPS hosting. It offers five options ranging from Budget (starting at $7.50 per month) to SSD Windows (starting at $13.50 per month). The company includes unlimited monthly data transfers and unlimited email with every VPS plan, and has a high-end $209.50 per month plan that boasts an impressive 35GB of RAM and 170GB of storage.

Dedicated Web Hosting
AccuWeb Hosting has three tiers of dedicated hosting: SSD (starting at $105 per month); Low Cost (starting at $110); and High RAM (starting at $455 per month). As with the VPS plan, AccuWeb's Windows-based dedicated hosting plan lets you create up to 250 email accounts; with a Linux-based dedicated plan, you can create unlimited email accounts.

If you want a dedicated server that handles the rigors of high-intensity Internet traffic, you'll be happy to know that you can spec out a high-end server with an incredible 20TB of monthly data transfers, 256GB of RAM, and four 600GB solid-state drives—if you're willing to pay more than $1,000 per month. Still, that's a more wallet-friendly option than what Media Temple offers; its dedicated hosting starts at $2,000 for unlimited domains, 10TB of monthly data transfers, 128GB of RAM, and 1TB of solid-state storage.

Overall, AccuWeb Hosting's dedicated hosting plans are varied and quite flexible. The servers have high-end specs that you won't get from HostGator, which maxes out with a $280 per month server that boasts 25TB of monthly data transfers, 16GB of RAM, and a 1,000GB hard drive. Arvixe, the Editors' Choice for dedicated hosting, surpasses both of them with a top-tier, $357 per month option that includes 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and unlimited monthly data transfers.

Managed WordPress
Webmasters who are serious about their WordPress installations will be happy to know that AccuWeb Hosting offers managed WordPress hosting that gives your site the white-glove treatment. This includes a preinstalled content management system, 24/7 support, automatic updates, and multilayer DDoS protection.

The WordPress Personal Web Hosting plan ($3.99 per month) offers unlimited domains, 10GB of storage, 60GB of monthly data transfers, and free WordPress migration and domain name registration. The WordPress Business Web Hosting plan (5.99 per month) ups the numbers to 30GB of storage, and 100GB of monthly data transfers, and includes search engine optimization and page caching plug-ins. The top-tier WordPress Enterprise Web Hosting plan ($10.99 per month) builds upon the other tiers with 50GB of storage, 200GB of monthly data transfers, and a free Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. All the plans include one-click installation, Google Apps integration, and free daily backups.

These packages nearly rival the ones offered by 1&1, the Editors' Choice for managed WordPress hosting. The top dog boasts WP Basic ($6.99 per month), WP Plus ($9.99 per month), and WP Unlimited ($14.99 per month) plans that include unlimited monthly data transfers, unlimited email, automatic malware detection and removal, automatic WordPress updates, and a curated list of recommended WordPress plug-ins and themes.

Site Creation and E-Commerce Tools
Creating an AccuWeb Hosting account is quite simple. After signing up for a plan, I received welcome emails and a note that it could take up to 48 hours for AccuWeb Hosting to set up my account. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait two days; the URL was up and running roughly two hours later.

I appreciated AccuWeb Hosting's custom cPanel back-end interface, as it's far easier to read and navigate than the traditional cPanel. I used it to access the Softaculous software library and to install WordPress as the content management system. I'm quite familiar with WordPress, so it was a breeze to create posts and pages and apply an attractive theme. In fact, even if you aren't familiar with WordPress, it should be simple to use. There is also software for non-WordPress website building, including Joomla and the PrestaShop ecommerce option.

I later used Magento to create an online store. It let me quickly create an attractive shop in just a few minutes by dragging and dropping website elements. I like that Magento has the fliexibility to house multiple storefronts and integrate eBay accounts.

Security Options
AccuWeb Hosting gives you plenty of options for safeguarding your website from those who would do harm. You can add a 128-bit SSL certificate ($49 per year), SpamExperts spam blocker (starting at $5.85 per quarter), and ID protection (for $8 per year). If you're serious about your site's security, you should look into all of these options.

Excellent Uptime
Website uptime is one of the most important aspects of a hosting service. While your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services—and they might not come back.

For this testing, I used a website-monitoring tool to track my AccuWeb Hosting-hosted test site's uptime. Every 15 minutes, the tool pinged my website and sent me an email if it was unable to contact the site for longer than one minute. I looked at the data for the most recent two weeks for each site's review. In my latest tests, AccuWeb Hosting proved incredibly stable. Of all the Web hosting services I've reviewed, only Arvixe matched its reliability over the most recent testing perioud . As long as it keeps on this course, you can count on it to deliver a rock-solid Web hosting experience.

Impressive Customer Service
AccuWeb Hosting offers both Web chat and 24/7 telephone customer support. When you ask a question via Web chat, AccuWeb Hosting serves up links to a knowledge database. When I asked about the difference between regular hosting and cloud-based hosting, AccuWeb Hosting linked to me satisfactory answers. Still, I tested the customer service by asking a representative the same question—and he linked me to the same knowledge base article!

I also gave telephone support (available 24/7) a call with the same question. The rep also gave me a satisfactory answer. I was incredibly pleased by AccuWeb Hosting's help squad. It was easily one of the best customer service teams I've encountered in the Web hosting space.

Money-Back Guarantee
AccuWeb Hosting has a decent 30-day money-back guarantee, but DreamHost bests it with an impressive 97-day money-back guarantee.

A Good Web Host
AccuWeb Hosting is a well-rounded service that you can count on for building a rock-solid website. It may fall just short of the Editors' Choice award-winning packages offered by DreamHost and HostGator, but it's worth checking out if you need quality shared, VPS, dedicated, or managed WordPress hosting.

London, UK (rushPRnews) 06/27/16 — You may have heard the term 'VPS Hosting, but what actually is it? VPS stands for Virtual Private Server – but, before exploring further, let's have a look at some of the basics of what is known as a 'virtual server'. In simple terms, a virtual server is exactly like the physical server which your web host uses locally, however, it is located elsewhere. Data is stored on a virtual server in the form of a VM (virtual machine) and this works in exactly the same way as a physical server would. Effectively, all that is really different about a virtual server is where it is located. So, what's so good about opting for VPS?

VPS Vs Shared Hosting

Starting a blog or business website means that you have to make a choice as to which type of hosting is the best for it. This choice can often be difficult to make, especially if you have never been required to make a decision of this type in the past. When it comes to WordPress blogs, for example, are they worth the investment of VPS hosting? The answer is most definitely yes. By opting for VPS hosting for your website or blog, you'll be able to take full control. See Smart Hosting UK for more information.

Is Shared Hosting Worth It?

One of the biggest questions asked by website and business owners is whether or not it's worth forgetting about VPS hosting at the beginning and opting for shared hosting instead. Shared hosting is where you rent a very small portion of a physical server, but it's being shared by hundreds of other people and websites at the same time. Because shared hosting is usually quite inexpensive, it's often one of the most popular options for startups, small business, and bloggers. However, the problem with shared hosting is that since there can be hundreds or even thousands of users all on the server at once, it doesn't take long for the resources to become sparse.

Why Start with VPS?

Most business and website owners start off with shared hosting, and then make the move towards a VPS once they have outgrown it. But, this move can be a difficult one. Once you've outgrown shared hosting, you will need to find a VPS plan to upgrade to, which could cause site downtime in the process. Rather than starting with shared hosting, it's a good idea to begin with a VPS straight away – they are often not as expensive as you may think with a number of affordable plans to choose from depending on your needs. By starting your website with shared hosting straight away, there's no need to worry about outgrowing your hosting plan or needing to upgrade, as you have a guaranteed amount of system resources which you'll be able to access as and when you need them, right from day one. It's also possible to upgrade your VPS hosting plan if necessary, with no server migration required.

With so many reliable yet affordable VPS packages available, it's a far better value for money choice than shared hosting.

Southfield, MI (PRWEB) June 27, 2016

Future Hosting, a managed VPS hosting provider, has warned WordPress hosting clients to be wary of plugins and themes downloaded from unverified sources. Many such plugin and themes are infected with malware (as reported by WordPress security researchers at Sucuri). By installing compromised plugins and themes, WordPress site owners expose their users to serious security risks.

Malware is a particular problem for so-called nulled premium themes. Criminals take legitimate premium themes which the developers charge for, insert malware code into them, and release them as free versions. Tempted by the lower cost, WordPress users often install these themes, thereby opening their WordPress site to the attacker and any software he or she may want to install.

"We provide hosting for thousands of WordPress sites. The WordPress application itself is quite secure, especially when it's hosted on a secure platform," said Maulesh Patel, VP of Operations of Future Hosting, "Most of the WordPress security problems we see are caused by poor management of the CMS, including actions like installing themes from untrusted sources. We strongly recommend that users download themes from official repositories or reputable developers."

Injecting malicious code into a site is the goal of most attacks against WordPress. Usually that's difficult to do because the attacker has to find some way to breach the security of the server or content management system. If users install nulled themes, they're doing the attacker's work for them.

Plugins and themes should be downloaded from the official WordPress Plugin Repository or Theme Repository. Premium themes are available from many sources, but WordPress users should ensure that they download from a reputable marketplace, or from the sites of the theme or plugin developer.

When you have made up your mind to start a business and make your presence online, you need to first choose a web host. The web host is like the plaza in which you open your shop for customers to visit. There are many web hosting services available online and doing some research along with going through some customer reviews is best before you pick one. However, the first thing that you need to know are the requirements that a web hosting service must met to be called the best hosting service.

First thing that you need to know is that there are different types of hosting. You could pick dedicated server hosting, shared hosting, virtual private server hosting or many other types of hosting plans. Dedicated server hosting is when you get a server dedicated for only your website and so you use all of its resources. You have good control over your server but this type of hosting is one of the most expensive ones. Shared hosting is almost always the first pick for starting businesses because it meets all their needs. In this hosting you share a server with many other websites.

You get access to only limited and specified resources on the server but you don't mind that because that's more than enough for a starting website. It is also one of the most affordable types of hosting plans. However, different web hosting companies will offer different rates based on what sub-services they are offering with shared hosting. The most affordable service available on the internet as of now is Temok. It is only for a limited time but their rates are probably the best on the internet for their hosting plans.

Other things that need to be looked at when picking up the best hosting plan is how much bandwidth you are being offered, the ability to add further domains and parked domains. It is best if you are able to find a service that does not have any cap on bandwidth. Temok does not have any limit on its bandwidth offering even on its most basic package. You can add multiple domains on the same plan and you could even go for parked domains if you want. How much space you are offered as a starting website should not matter because less is more at this point.

One of the most important yet ignored things when picking up best hosting services is quality customer support. You won't realize the value of good customer support until you are in some technical trouble and they don't pick your phone up. Even a minute of downtime for a website can be detrimental to its traffic population. More importantly, you need your servers up and running at their optimum when you have spikes on your website. In a nutshell, you need to ask about the customer service and if it is available for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

ARK: Survival Evolved players on the Xbox One received a surprise during the Xbox E3 2016 media briefing when the game was listed as supporting the new "Play Anywhere" cross-buy and cross-play initiative with Windows 10 PCs. Studio Wildcard revealed Thursday there are some added benefits and limitations to supporting the open-world survival title on both platforms.

Studio Wildcard Co-Creative Director Jesse Rapczack appeared on the Twitch E3 2016 livestream and Xbox Daily livestream to discuss the "Play Anywhere" initiative with ARK: Survival Evolved. The Steam PC version of ARK will continue to exist as its own separate entity. It will remain the lead platform and run its own official and player dedicated servers.

Meanwhile, the Windows 10 PC version of ARK: Survival Evolved will come free with the purchase of the Xbox One edition (and vice versa). The two platforms will share the same servers allowing for players on both PC and Xbox One to play together. Additionally, it will allow players to set up their own dedicated server using a Windows 10 PC to run the game.

ARK: Survival Evolved The Center Skull Island (PC, Xbox One)

[Image via ARK: Survival Evolved]Currently, console players have to set up an Xbox One as a dedicated server for ARK. This means running the console 24/7 and dealing with the numerous limitations.

Running an Xbox One as a player dedicated ARK server is infamous for running out of memory and suffering other performance and stability issues when as the player count increases. It is also more difficult to manage the myriad of settings and support it than a regular PC server as many options are hidden, though Studio Wildcard is working to expose as many as possible in the user interface.

The ability to host Xbox player dedicated servers on Windows 10 PCs has another added benefit not specified Studio Wildcard at E3. This will also allow support for third-party hosting services to enter the picture and allow players to rent and run their own servers versus running one from their home. This is something Studio Wildcard has mentioned multiple times in the past, but is still not ready to share details.

ARK: Survival Evolved Swamp Cave (PC)

[Image via Studio Wildcard]Support for rentable dedicated servers is something Rapczack has mentioned before.

"We're working now to allow both players and third-party hosting companies to host Windows-based Xbox servers," the Creative Director explained, as covered by Inquisitr in February. "That actually most of the people that play Ark on PC play on private servers; we could just never pay for all the servers for the players that are out there. That's especially true on Xbox; it would be enormously expensive to keep these persistent servers up basically forever. Players start a character on there and that's where their progress is."

"We're really excited to get that support out there, and part of that will be to make sure that the Xbox version and those servers are kind of kept up to date with the PC version and really allow those players to take advantage of the latest stuff. And when they're hosting their own servers and stuff like that be able to configure them with the newest content and kind of customize it to the way they want."

A timeline on when ARK: Survival Evolved will add support for Xbox "Play Anywhere" was not provided by Studio Wildcard. Microsoft is dropping titles that support the new initiative as soon as this summer with releases of titles like We Happy Few with it really taking off in the fall with Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4. All Microsoft first-party titles will support the program going forward.

What do you think of ARK: Survival Evolved supporting cross-play and cross-buy for the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs? Sound off in the comments below.

BuyVM – $7/m KVM 2GB RAM / 40GB SSD / 2TB BW – in Las Vegas

Tags: buyvm, kvm, openvz, vegas, windows, yearly Date/Time: June 17, 2016 @ 4:46 am, by Jarland Donnell

BuyVM became famous in the low-end market for offering 128MB OpenVZ for $15/year. At the time that they offered it, people considered it unsustainable. Over the next year or so, startups struggled hard to compete. Many of them overselling to the point of horrible performance and going bankrupt in the process. The whole time, BuyVM continued to pull it off without showing any signs of stress, with excellent VM performance.

Over time, BuyVM's prices stayed the same while others continued the race to the bottom. Their profitability increased with the continual drop in hardware cost, and they used their success to improve the quality of their service. Their control panel, Stallion, is custom made with features like backups, snapshots, IPv4 failover and anycast, as well as both AJAX and Java consoles.

Today, BuyVM breaks their tradition of never lowering cost to bring you the best KVM offer they've had to date. If you can't tell, I'm a little excited to bring this offer to you. If you've ever been interested, here is a way to set up your own Minecraft Server using Microsoft Azure. Depending on how you choose to play Minecraft, whether it be Windows 10 PC or a Mac, there are plenty of reasons why you would choose to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server, instead of using your own machine.

Here's a short list:

  • You can choose a preconfigured Minecraft server virtual machine to launch from the Azure Marketplace – no installation required.
  • Choose from a range of a VM sizes to meet your performance and cost requirements.
Running a server on your own physical machine means choosing between limiting access to your home network, or dealing with the security risk of exposing your home network to the internet.
  • Avoid hardware costs – pay for a VM when you need it and shut it down when you don't.
Whitelist trusted players to connect from anywhere without wrestling with firewalls and port forwarding.
  • Freedom from worry about losing data to hardware failure with disks backed by Azure Storage Service.
  • If you mess up the whole machine no big deal, delete it and deploy another. If you back up your world from time to time you can restart from where you left off.

Now that you have the reasons to use Azure, let's take a look at what steps you need to complete how to set up your own Minecraft Server.

1. Buy Minecraft and set up a Mojang account. You need these in order to play Minecraft and to be successful in actually setting up a Minecraft Server.

2. Get a Microsoft Azure account. There's a free trial, plus some free credits for your first month on Microsoft Azure.

3. Select the Minecraft Server Virtual Machine from the Azure Marketplace.

4. Click "Create Virtual Machine"

5. Next, you will need to log in to your Microsoft Azure Account and click "Create"

minecraftserver2 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

6. Here, you'll have to do some important configuration steps (some are optional):

  • Pick a name for your server (the url for your server will be name.cloudapp.net)
  • Enter a username to use as an administrator
  • Define a password or upload an ssh key you will use to access your server
  • Select a server size / pricing tier, A1 will be a good size to start with
  • Optional: Configure Network, Storage and Diagnostics
  • Optional: Select or define a name to group your Azure resources
  • Optional: Select the subscription to use if you have got multiple
  • Select a location / data center to host your server, pick a location close to your users

ms How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

7. Click "Create" to have Azure create your Minecraft Server (May take several minutes to finish, so hang tight!)

8. After that's done, your Minecraft server will be ready. In order to connect to your server in Minecraft, use the URL and Port 25565 like this: Minecraftservername.cloudapp.net:25565

minecraftserver3 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

9. If you do not have the most up-to-date version of Minecraft, you may get an error message telling you to update your Minecraft server.  Update your Minecraft Server to the most current version.

minecraftserver4 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

10. In order to update your server, as well as manage some additional settings, log into your server using SSH (available on Linux or Mac) or a tool like PuTTY (available on Windows). Bash and SSH will be coming to Windows 10 later this summer in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

11. After logging into your Minecraft server with you username and password, go to the folder of your Minecraft Server "cd /srv/minecraft_server".

minecraftserver5 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

12. Download the current version of the Minecraft server using CURL. Currently, this would be "sudo curl –remote-name ttps://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/versions/1.10/minecraft_server.1.10.jar". Here is the link that you use to download the most up-to-date server version.

13. While in the correct folder, you can update the ops.json file so you have the correct permissions to modify the game while you are logged into our server. You can edit the file using nano like this: "sudo nano ops.json". Edit the file like shown below using your Minecraft username and unique ID. Go here to find your Minecraft unique ID.

[
{
"uuid": "uuid",
"name": "minecraft_username",
"level": 4
}
]

minecraftserver6 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

14. Now all you have to do is save the file. Save the file by using "CTRL + o" and exit Nano using "CTRL + x". You can also edit your "server.properties" file in order to further manage different configuration settings on your server. More details about your Minecraft server properties can be found at the Minecraft Wiki.

15. In order to use the current version of Minecraft Server that you downloaded, you need to edit the service configuration using Nano like this: "sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/minecraft-server.service". You will need to reference the new version of the Minecraft Server here (see below).

minecraftserver7 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

16. Now, all you have to do is save the file and exit Nano.

17. Next, you will just need to stop and restart the Minecraft Server service. You may also need to reload the systemd state before using "systemctl daemon-reload". Run "systemctl restart minecraft-server" to restart the service.

18. After you've restarted the service, it may take a minute or two to restart. Afterwards, you can refresh your server in your Minecraft client and connect your server to start creating on your very own Minecraft Server.

minecraftserver8 How to use Microsoft Azure to host a Minecraft Server

19. Hooray! You have now set up your own Minecraft Server using Microsoft Azure.

If you run into any problems or need help with error messages, be sure to visit the Minecraft Wiki on "Setting up a server" for more information and help. The Minecraft Wiki also has helpful information on configuring and managing Minecraft server configuration settings.

Further, a member of Linux Australia has suggested the office-bearers should resign en masse for not anticipating a breakdown in hosting the organisation's website recently.

Linux Australia secretary, Sae Ra Germaine, posted to the Linux-aus mailing list in April to explain why the organisation experienced server downtime, ultimately because the team charged with managing this task, while recognising a risk of disruption, did not engage with the University hosting the server instead choosing only to liaise with ex-employees, and discontinued searching for a new host between December 2015 and March 2016.

Consequently, and one might suggest predictably, the organisation experienced an outage and scrambled to secure new hosting and migrate data and restore backups.

Given Linux Australia is a profit-generating organisation, essentially serving no other visible purpose than to run the Linux.Conf.Au conference each year, and reported a profit of $143K last year it must be asked why the organisation makes the curious decision to rely on donated hosting rather than simply pay for robust, and importantly SLA-backed, hosting. It is not due to financial considerations because it made the decision to purchase and own its server hardware, going for CapEx over OpEx.

Without a change in mindset, I suggested this would not be the last time Linux Australia suffered such an outage.

Predictably, a vocal minority of Linux Australia members chose to read into this either a total criticism of the organisation, or an aggression towards volunteer workers, or indeed to close their ears and just say "that journalist has no integrity" as if this made the issue at hand disappear.

Rational members steered the topic back to the actual problem of hosting, and whether my argument had a basis.

"The core point regarding hosting is a reasonable observation ... It does seem strange that L[inux] A[ustralia] would rely on donated hosting ..." stated Phillip Smith.

Noel Butler agreed. "The wrong decision to keep expecting an org like this with a healthy bank account to get free hosting. When you don't pay for it you are of course at the mercy of someone else's generosity. When you pay for it, you end up with SLAs," he stated.

Butler continued, "the fact no one took ownership and worked day in day out to move it after being given notice reflects poorly upon that team, and the fact nobody did squat till it was too late, that entire team should be asked to resign."

Butler is blunt in his message, but he reflects reality, further adding "in the real world out there ... do you think your employers would give you that option [of offering up your own resignation] if you did it to them? No, they'd have security escort you off premises so fast you'd be wondering what just happened."

Butler is right in the fundamental heart of his message, though it is a difficult line because Linux Australia is staffed by unpaid volunteers.

Nevertheless, while it is important to recognise the vital and good work of volunteers there is still an onus of responsibility in a volunteer position.

The issue remains that the outage was predictable and preventable. The issue remains that once risks were identified and Linux Australia sought to find new hosting it left this project dormant for three months.

I previously commented on the team's apparent lack of willingness to actually engage with those who held the server hosting's future in their hands, choosing instead to only deal with ex-, or soon-to-be ex-staff, and by placing a sticker on a server. This is a level of communication akin to Mr Bean's artistic appreciation of Whistler's Mother being "nice frame."

In a similar fashion, this team chose to remain silent and not act. It may be they were busy with work and with life, and being volunteers they absolutely have that right. Yet, as responsible adults, there is a reasonable expectation to make their inability to focus on, and action, re-hosting known to others.

Even Russell Coker, who lambasted much of my previous writing as rubbish, acknowledged "In retrospect it would have been a better idea for L[inux] A[ustralia] to work with people from LUV [Victorian Linux User Group] in arranging these things."

Hugh Blemings, the president of Linux Australia, made an articulate case to put this matter in perspective.

"I was, frankly, a bit annoyed that our infrastructure went offline precipitously," he states, "... but the thing that really allowed me, for want of a better term, to find peace with the situation was the realisation that actually – it didn't really matter."

"Nobody died, no one lost revenue, no LA events were dramatically impacted" he stated.

Blemings goes on to say "What we do is fantastic, important and useful, but it isn't (and probably shouldn't) be mission critical."

Blemings is right, and he correctly calls upon Linux Australia members to act with civility to each other (and towards technology journos, right?).

Yet, as much as the work and time constraints of volunteers can be appreciated, Blemings simultaneously notes, "this is not to say for a moment that we shouldn't take our responsibilities or the work undertaken seriously".

Although Blemings intervened to quell some rising hostility in the members' discussion, in a way he intervened too soon. The organisation was beginning to acknowledge there must be a better way of managing server hosting than to buy a server for an upfront cost, then ask mates to stick it in their server rack for free, and hope nobody notices when they leave the organisation because nobody really wants to have to talk to anyone.

The discussion commenced, and then with a stroke reminding people to be civil, concluded without resolution.

The issues remain, and sadly until the proper discussion has taken place with decisions made and actioned, Linux Australia can continue to expect to endure outages.

After all, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.
