Future Hosting, a specialized VPS hosting and dedicated server hosting provider, has warned users of the Git version control system to update Git clients and servers as soon as possible. Recently discovered vulnerabilities in the application, which were disclosed late last month (CVE-2016-2315, CVE-2016-2324), put Git repositories at risk of a remote code execution vulnerability that could allow an attacker to compromise servers used for source control.
The vulnerabilities are present in the Git 2.x, 1.9, and 1.7 branches. Git users should immediately update both Git servers and clients using their Linux distribution's package manager. Most major distributions, including CentOS, now have patched versions in their repository.
?Future Hosting provides managed hosting services for thousands of developers and software projects, with both self-hosted Git repositories and BitBucket SaaS hosting plans," said Maulesh Patel, VP of Operations of Future Hosting, ?We want to ensure that developers are aware of the potential risks and that they update all Git clients and servers as soon as possible."
As a provider of server hosting for developers and Git users, Future Hosting is concerned that the vulnerabilities have not been widely publicised, leaving many developers and projects vulnerable. The attack has the potential to allow remote code execution with the creation of a malicious Git repository.
Git is used by millions of developers and, since its initial release by Linux creator Linus Torvalds, has become the de facto standard for open source version control. Many popular open source and proprietary software projects use Github. Any exploitable vulnerability could put those projects at risk.

Finding the most suitable web hosting service to use doesn't have to be difficult at all, even when it is your first time shopping for web hosting. There are a few quick tips you can apply to help you find the best web hosting service package to go for. We are going to discuss them in this article.
Start with Domain Name
Web hosting service is usually marketed along with a domain name. You will need both to be able to start a website. You can even get a free domain name with your hosting service, but be sure to read the fine prints on this type of offer or bonus; you need to be extra certain that the domain name is yours.
Support for Your CMS Platform
Whether you are starting a personal blog or an online store, chances are you already have a CMS (Content Management System) platform in mind. For blogging, you can use WordPress or Joomla. Online stores can choose to use Drupal or Magento for the job.
Whichever CMS platform you want to use, find out more about its requirements before you start comparing web hosting services. WordPress, for instance, requires you to have a web hosting plan with at least one MySQL database and support for PHP.
Disk Space
You also need sufficient web hosting space for all of your files. If you are not sure about how much hosting space you really need, you can either run a test site locally or just go for a moderate-sized web hosting service. For most new sites, anything above 1 GB is more than enough.
There are also unlimited web hosting services available. They cost slightly more than limited service packages, but you don't have to worry about running out of space at all.
Monthly Bandwidth
Monthly bandwidth or monthly data transfer is the amount of data you are allowed to stream to and from the server in a month. If a page on your site is 100kb and you have 1,000 visitors, you are looking at around 100,000 KB of data transfer (or 100 MB). That's just for one page.
Web hosting companies are quite generous with their monthly data transfer allocation, so you seldom need to worry on this subject. If your site does get a lot of traffic – such as when your content goes viral – then you can always get more bandwidth allocated to your account.
Similar to web hosting space, you can also choose a service package with unlimited or unmetered bandwidth. There is usually a fair usage policy attached to unlimited bandwidth, but standard websites should be able to stay within fair usage without a problem.
Support for Multiple Domains
You may be starting with just one site – or plan to have online one site – right now and then add more in the future. If this is the case, support for multiple domain names is a must-have feature. You can add more domain names in the future and run then using the same web hosting account.
Support for multiple domains allow you to develop more sites and host them on the same server without the need to pay for more accounts or services. With unlimited hosting, you can even run hundreds of sites on a single account.
Support for multiple domains also come with multiple databases and individual email accounts. This way, you can have several instances of your favorite CMS platform running. You can also create multiple email accounts with different domain names.
Emails & FTP
These two features, emails and FTP, are also part of the things you absolutely need to run a website. You can have yourname@yourdomain.com by simply adding the email account from the hosting service control panel. You can then send and receive emails using that address.
FTP or File Transfer Protocol, on the other hand, is useful for setting up and managing your site. When you need to upload a lot of pictures to the server, for instance, you can connect to it using a standard FTP client and upload all of the images in one go. It is much simpler than using the native file manager offered by the control panel.
Additional Services
Those are the basic features you need to look for from a web hosting service. Aside from the features we discussed earlier, there are other services and aspects that you should consider before making any purchase decision:
- Automated backups can help you maintain a comprehensive backup of your site(s) without a problem.
- Money-back guarantee means you can test the web hosting service quality without fear of losing your money should you are not happy with it.
- Coupons and promotional offers are everywhere, so be sure to use them to get discounts and bonuses upon signing up for an account.
- Make sure you choose a web hosting company with superb customer and technical support, so you can keep your site running smoothly without hassle.

Mistakes happen, but some are more embarrassing than others.
Web hosting company 123-reg effectively deleted some of its customers' websites, according to the company's support page. It was unclear how many of the 1.7 million sites hosted by the United Kingdom-based company were impacted by the error, which occurred during server maintenance, however the BBC reported the company said it was a "small proportion."
"We can conclude that the issues faced have resulted in some data loss for some customers," the company said in a statement, according to the BBC. "The fault was limited to 67 servers out of 115,000 across Europe. ... We are investigating the restoration of each VPS [virtual private server] on a case-by-case basis and are working individually with customers to keep them informed of the website recovery process."
Virtual private servers are cheaper than dedicated servers and can host a number of websites, making them especially affordable for small business owners.
The host did not immediately return an email from ABC News seeking comment, however 123-reg's support page notes the company is communicating with customers as they try to salvage their data.
"Our system engineers are testing multiple third party data recovery software and we are definitely seeing some results," an update posted today said. "As this is referring solely to data recovery, the next thing on our list is actually reimaging the hosts with the data we have retrieved (aka getting the VPS packages back online)."
The blunder has caused a headache for customers, with many tweeting their concern at the company.
"This will wreck my business & plenty of others I am sure," one user wrote.
Rainbow Stream – Use Twitter From the Command Line on your VPS
centos, linux, python, rainbowstream, twitter, ubuntu March 30, 2016 @ 2:39 am, by Jarland Donnell
Twitter's versatile platform makes it easy for people to stay up to date on the latest information and news. Did you know that Twitter's API can be rapidly configured to integrate directly into almost any app?
Using Rainbow Stream, you can setup your VPS to view, post or read Twitter messages using the command line interface. Rainbow Stream is written in Python and as its name suggests, its main feature is the ability to display Twitter feed in a colorful fancy console.
In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how to install and operate Rainbow Stream on your Linux VPS.
Prerequisites for Installing Rainbow Stream You will need to have installed Python and pip version 2.7.x or 3.x. In most Linux distributions, Python should already be installed on your system. It is important to verify the version of Python on your system before performing this install. To do this, type execute this command:
python –version
If Python has not been installed, you can install it using the following commands for your specific flavor of Linux.
Getting Rainbow Stream Installed on your VPS Now that you've satisfied the Python prerequisites, it's time to install the Rainbow Stream Twitter client using the command line interface. Depending on which version of Python that you have installed, you will use one of the following commands:
Tip: If you have difficulties, ensure that you are running this as a root or with admin privileges. After a successful installation, you should get the below message in your terminal.
With the following command you will see be able to see the Rainbow Stream help guide:
rainbowstream -h
Connecting Rainbow Stream to the Twitter API
Now that the client is installed we will need to connect and authorize the application on Twitter using your Twitter account. To initiate the authorization process, simply run the following command, which will automatically pop up a web browser window for authorization:
rainbowstream
Log in with your Twitter account and hit the button that says "Authorize App". Copy the code presented to you in the browser window without closing it. Navigate back to the terminal and paste the PIN you just copied. Your client is now connected to your Twitter account.
Tip: If you are trying to authorize Rainbow Stream on a remote headless server, you can copy and paste the authorization URL to a web browser running on a separate computer. Getting Started with Rainbow Stream
The "theme" command allows you to switch your Twitter timeline color theme among four of the built-in Twitter themes quickly. Just type "theme" followed by a theme name (available via tab-autocomplete).
Typing the 'home' command will show your timeline.
Typing the 'me' will show your last tweets.
To tweet something just type 't' followed by your tweet.
The most intriguing feature of Rainbow Stream is the ability to view tweet- embedded images directly in a terminal. To do this, you will need to launch rainbowstream with parameter "-iot".
This should have you up and running with Rainbow Stream. Advanced users could setup CRON jobs to perform automated tasks. However, that is outside of the scope of this document. Have you implemented Rainbow Stream on your VPS? Share your Rainbow Stream innovations with our user base in the comments section below.

The Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau Monday announced a strategic realignment and expansion of its leadership team.
Julie Calvert, the bureau's long-time vice president of communications and strategic development, will depart June 1 to transition to a new full-time role as executive director of Source Cincinnati, a regional initiative driving national placemaking efforts for Cincinnati. Calvert, a 15-year bureau veteran, has been an on-loan executive to Source Cincinnati while continuing her day-to-day bureau responsibilities over the past two years.
Source Cincinnati was created by a regional business and civic coalition, including the bureau, the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber and Redi Cincinnati among others, to establish one voice for enhancing national perceptions of Cincinnati to spur business, talent and visitor attraction.
Randie Adam was promoted from director of marketing to a newly-created vice president of marketing and visitor services role.

Adam has led award-winning work in destination marketing and management for many years, having served as the executive director of Hocking Hills Convention and Visitors Bureau prior to joining the Cincinnati bureau in 2007. Adam serves on the board of the Ohio Travel Association and has an active role with the board of the Ohio Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus.

Jason Dunn was promoted to vice president of multicultural and community development. During his tenure at the bureau, the number of multicultural meetings in Cincinnati have increased significantly, positioning Cincinnati as a national leader in attracting and hosting multicultural meetings and bringing $33 million in economic impact between 2006-2011. Dunn currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners, as board chair of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, and is chairman of the Cincinnati Police Foundation. Dunn is also head of the local organizing committee for the 2016 NAACP National Convention.
In his new role, Dunn will lead efforts to continue expanding Cincinnati's multicultural convention business, as well as in building corporate and community support and government relations for the bureau and industry initiatives.
On Fox News' 'Outnumbered' Monday, co-host Andrea Tantaros conveniently brought up Hillary Clinton's email server during a segment about Tom Brady.
Somehow a Monday afternoon Fox News segment about New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's four-game suspension turned into an indictment of Hillary Clinton.
During the network's daytime talk show Outnumbered, Judge Andrew Napolitano delivered his legal assessment of the situation—in which a federal appeals court ruled Brady will have to serve the previously overturned suspension in relation to the "Deflategate" scandal—when co-host Andrea Tantaros chimed in with her own unique take.
"It sounds familiar," Tantaros said of Brady's decision to destroy a cell phone that may or may not have contained incriminating evidence.
"Yes it does! The server in Chappaquiddick," Napolitano said, laughing, before correcting himself. Clinton's private email server was reportedly kept in the basement of her home in Chappaqua, N.Y.; not the infamous Massachusetts island.
"Brady and Belichick are like the Bill and Hillary of football," Tantaros remarked. "I mean, deleting the evidence." Previously, when reporters asked Clinton if she "wiped" her servers, she responded, "What, like with a cloth or something?"
Remarkably, this is not the first time conservatives have attempted to paint Brady and Clinton with the same tainted brush. Columns in the Weekly Standard and Breitbart.com accused the media of holding NFL players to a higher standard than public officials like the current Democratic presidential frontrunner.
Speaking to a Boston-based radio host last summer, former GOP presidential candidate—and possible Ted Cruz running mate—Carly Fiorina joked, "Maybe Tom Brady learned how to wipe his phone clean by watching Hillary Clinton wipe her server clean. I mean, hey, if the secretary of state can just wipe out all relevant information on an investigation involving her, maybe Tom Brady decided, 'I can just wipe out all the text messages as an investigation swirls about me?'"
Similarly, Donald Trump made such an analogy by way of defending his one-time supporter Brady. "They had no definitive proof against Tom Brady or #patriots," Trump tweeted one month before he officially launched his presidential campaign. "If Hillary doesn't have to produce Emails, why should Tom? Very unfair!"
Despite the new ruling, Trump was still standing up for the quarterback at a campaign rally earlier today. In fact, he opened his remarks with this declaration: "Leave Tom Brady alone!"
A case of fat fingers or dodgy code? We don't know -- but it's likely someone in 123reg's VPS hosting department will be looking for a new job soon.
Over the weekend, 123reg, known for providing cheap domain name registration and hosting, messed up. In what is being considered a mass deletion spree, an unspecified number of virtual private server (VPS) web hosting clients have realized their websites have faded from existence as if they never were to begin with.
For large corporations and SMBs alike, the eradication of a business' website without warning can be incredibly damaging and cause chaos for months to come -- a problem 123reg is going to have to face and explain to a horde of angry clients.
At the least, hundreds are in trouble. However, it could be thousands.
The company said in a status update on 16 April that an unspecified problem beyond "connectivity issues" and the "performance of our VPS product" was being investigated by engineers.
In a flurry of updates, 123reg said "all hands were on deck" to fix the problem, and the issue has been damaging enough to bring in external help.
123reg's Twitter account has been incredibly vague, which is likely to incense companies which are now hobbled -- or put on ice -- without a digital profile. The firm says that engineers are working on the problem, and VPS packages are being restored "using data recovery tools," which means that customer data has been wiped, somehow.
The advisory says:
"We are attempting to recover your packages bit by bit, while checking data integrity at the same time.
The process is quite time-consuming and the undergoing work is being done in parallel on multiple servers, in several locations.
Due to the nature of this process, we are unable to prioritise the recovery of specific hosts, but we are focused on restoring bulks of data at the moment. Progress is visible, and we have already managed restoring a certain number of hosts. However, we are unable to estimate when will the recovery be finished on all of the affected packages."
To make matters worse, 123reg is asking customers with backups to fix their own problem (although 123reg has been nice enough to provide a basic how-to guide).
One customer, software firm InnMaster, told The Register that on Saturday morning, someone from the web host "ran a script that had a catastrophic error in it," resulting in the deletion of servers and customer websites.
"Our hosting provider still hasn't restored anyone's data and most of their customers' websites are still offline," the company said in a statement. "They have told all customers that they would be better off starting from scratch with a blank server and rebuilding it, which is what we are now doing. Building a new web server from a fresh install is a full days' work."
As you can imagine, there are hundreds of business owners and angry customers flocking to social media to vent their frustration. Just a snapshot of the situation is below, and unfortunately, there is no word on how long it will take for service to be fully restored -- or even if this is possible.
123reg told ZDNet:
"We suffered a technical fault, which has affected a minority of 123 Reg customers. The fault was limited to 67 servers out of 115,000 (across Europe) and it is important to note that only a selection of customers on the 67 servers affected has been impacted.
We are investigating the restoration of each VPS on a case-by-case basis and are working individually with customers to keep them informed of the website recovery process. We are working as quickly as we can to restore service to normal."
